Prof Richard Nile ~ Adjunct Professorial Research Fellow

Professional Background: Richard Nile is a specialist in Historical and Literary Studies and publishes across three interrelated areas of Medical Humanities, History of Emotions, and Australian Studies. He is an Adjunct Professorial Research Fellow at James Cook University and Senior Honorary Research Fellow (Professor) at the University of Western Australia. A former Professor of History, Academic Head of Humanities and Creative Arts, and Associate Dean of Research at JCU, Richard has worked variously as Professor and Director of the Humanities Research Institute Murdoch University, Professor and Director of the  Australia Research Institute Curtin University, Director of the Australian Studies Centre University of Queensland, and Deputy and Interim Head of the Menzies Centre University of London. Richard began his career as a Lecturer at the Universities of New South Wales and Western Australia. He has been Distinguished Visiting Professor at Copenhagen University, Australia-India Council Visiting Professor at Himachal Pradesh University, Visiting Fellow and Director of Australian Studies at Eotvos Lorand University Budapest and the University of Debrecen, and University Fellow at the University of Western Australia. Richard’s books have been published across more than thirty international editions and translations. He is the author of 50+ articles and chapters and a similar number of essays and occasional pieces, and the editor of 97 scholarly volumes. A committed educator and researcher, Richard teaches Australian and world history and cultural and literary studies. 

Teaching Background: Richard has taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses in various parts of the world, including Australia, Britain, Denmark, India, Italy, Hungary, Japan, and Sweden. He began his career teaching History at The University of New South Wales and The University of Western Australia. At The University of London and The University of Queensland, he taught History and Literature. Richard taught Cultural Studies, History, and Politics at Curtin and Murdoch Universities, and convened postdoctoral masterclass series on Scholarly Writing, Managing an Academic Career, and Higher Degree Research Supervision. Richard taught Australian Literature at the University of Copenhagen, while other international roles have included Australian Studies lecture series in Hungary, Japan and Sweden. He designed and co-taught Australian Studies programs at the Eotvos Lorand University Budapest and the University of Debrecen, and was part of a Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade funded project that developed curriculum resources in Indonesia. At JCU, Richard has convened and taught subjects across History, Literature, and Creative Arts, and masterclass series for Higher Degree Research Students.

Engagement: A former Chair of the Foundation of Australian Literary Studies, Perth International Writers Festival, and Western Australian Writers Centre, Richard has served on the executives of the Queensland Writers Centre, Brisbane Writers Festival, Woodford Words and Ideas Forum and Agricultural Hall of Fame (WA). He is a former manager of the Bicentennial Visiting Fellowship and the Northcote Scholarship and Fellowship schemes through the Menzies Trust at the University of London and managed for a number of years the Australia-India Council Visiting Scholar Program. The Founder and Director of the Australian Public Intellectual Network, Richard served as a founding executive member of the International Australian Studies Association and the European Australian Studies Association, and is a former executive member of the Round Table and British Australian Studies Association. Richard was for eleven years the editor of the Journal of Australian Studies. He also edited Australian Cultural History, New Talents 21C, London Papers in Australian Studies, The Australian Studies Bulletin, and three scholarly book series Australian Studies, Australian Scholarly Classics and Debut. Richard has convened more than 20 international conferences and presented keynote and plenary addresses at major events in Australia, Britain, Canada, Hungary, India and Italy.
