About

I am a veterinarian currently registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, The Veterinary Council of New Zealand and the Veterinary Surgeons Board of Queensland.

My background is in mixed and aquaculture veterinary practice in Ireland and the UK.  In 2004, I joined the Department of Veterinary Pathology in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in University College Dublin and continued my interest in production animal pathology when I subsequently joined the Veterinary Laboratories Agency in the UK.  During this period, I audited at EU Community and National Reference Laboratory level for compliance with ISO 17025:2005. Throughout, I have been involved in aspects of public health and production animal diagnostics and welfare, and I joined JCU to develop the discipline of veterinary public health (VPH) within the current School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences.

My role within the SVBMS revolves around the production and hygiene of foods of animal origin, food security and subsistence farming, production animal disease, welfare at slaughter, zoonoses and biosecurity. Prior to becoming a veterinarian, I obtained a certificate in science in aquculture and I completed my Masters in Science with distinction in Aquatic Veterinary Studies from the Institute of Aquaculture in Stirling University, Scotland.

Since completing a Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching I have become more involved in interactive learning within VPH.

Interests
Professional
  • My professional interests include the pathology of terrestrial and aquacultured production animals; improving veterinary involvement in aquaculture and the pet fish industry, food security and food hygiene as a means of improving livelihoods in developing countries; and zoonoses surveillance and control in rural and developing societies.
Research
  • Research interests currently focus on zoonoses surveillance and the One Health approach and hygiene and best practice during the informal slaughter of farm animals.
Teaching
  • My teaching priority is to make the discipline of veterinary public health relevant to today's veterinary graduate. I have adopted a work integrated learning approach and aim to expose students to a broader scope of veterinary public health than has been taught traditionally.
Experience
  • 2007 to 2010 - Veterinary Investigation Officer, Veterinary Laboratories Agency (U.K.)
  • 2004 to 2007 - Lecturer Veterinary Pathology, UCD Dublin (Ireland)
