About

Dr. Dave Jones is a researcher specializing in applying genomics within advanced breeding programs for aquaculture species.

Dave was awarded his PhD in aquaculture genomics from James Cook University in 2014 which focused on building the genomic tools and background knowledge necessary for the establishment of advanced genetic breeding programs for the silver-lipped pearl oyster in Australia and Indonesia. Alongside his PhD, Dave also applied his knowledge and skills to an independent selective breeding program for the white-legged shrimp in Indonesia. Since then, he has worked at the Sydney Institute of Marine Science and Macquarie University, Sydney, investigating the cause of a disease in the silver-lipped pearl oyster. Additionally, he has worked at Ifremer, Pacific Center in French Polynesia, developing the resources necessary for genetic breeding programs in the black-lipped pearl oyster. To date, he has published 41+ scientific articles related to genetics and aquaculture.

Dave’s primary expertise involves the application of genetic and genomic tools to address research questions with a strong applied aquaculture focus. He has designed and validated numerous commercial single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) panels across multiple leading platforms for a diverse array of species. Their development and application has allowed the creating of genomic linkage maps, and has enabled links to be drawn between an individual's genotype and phenotypic variance of ecological and commercial importance.

Dave has played a substantial role in developing co-funded ARC and CRC-P genomic research projects at JCU with colleagues within the Centre for Sustainable Tropical Fisheries and Aquaculture (CSTFA). As a result, he has ongoing collaborations with researchers from the University of Sydney; CSIRO at Bribie Island; AGRF in Melbourne; IFREMER in French Polynesia and Montpellier; and Jeju National University, South Korea. In addition, he also has ongoing research projects with aquaculture commercial partners in Broome, Western Australia, and Melbourne, Victoria.

Dave has seen one PhD candidate through to completion and has two current PhD students. He is actively involved as a mentor for many past and present HDR students within CSTFA and the Molecular Ecology and Evolution Laboratory (MEEL). Between 2009 and 2015, Dave presented guest lectures and tutored within numerous first year to fourth year genetics and aquaculture undergraduate subjects at JCU.

Dave has been an integral contributor to several research projects at JCU including:

Unleashing the tiger - advanced breeding to transform prawn aquaculture, ARC Industrial Transformation Research Program (partners Seafarms, Australian Genome Research Facility, USyd, CSIRO)

Pearls of wisdom - breeding for increased tolerance to juvenile pearl oyster mortality syndrome, CRC-P for Northern Australia (industry partners Ellies Pearls, Cygnet Bay Pearls, Clipper Pearls)

Rapid iteration selective breeding: Australia's fish to feed the world, CRC-P (partner Mainstream Aquaculture)

Genetic audit of Harvest Road?s Akoya oyster (Pinctada fucata) broodstock and phenotypic assessment of existing cohorts relevant to the requirements of a selection program

Indicative Funding
$121,348 over 1 year, in partnership with Harvest Road Oceans ($71,348)
Summary
Harvest Road Oceans Pty Ltd wants to undertake a genetic audit of potential broodstock for use in a future selective breeding program for Akoya pearl oysters focusing primarily on oyster growth, shell depth and meat yield. Before such a program commences, it is vital to establish that the genetic diversity represented in the current broodstock population is sufficient to ensure long-term exploitation of genetic potential over subsequent generations of breeding. Therefore, this project aims to generate the preliminary data needed to undertake a genetic audit, estimate relatedness between animals from the current farm cohorts, generate genetic parameters and make recommendations on appropriate breeding scenarios for Harvest Road Oceans Pty Ltd.

Pearls of wisdom - Breeding for increase tolerance to juvenile pearl oyster mortality syndrome

Indicative Funding
$685,875 over 3 years (administered by Ellies Pearls)
Summary
A decade ago pearl farming was one of the major employers and contributors to the social-economic fabric of northern Australia, contributing $189.7 million farm-gate to the national economy. However, in recent years Australian pearl production has been severely impacted by episodic and large-scale mortality events by an as yet unidentified causative factor. These mortality events, termed juvenile pearl oyster mortality syndrome (or JPOMS), have resulted in massive write-downs in production and economic value of the industry. This project will develop the genetic knowledge and lay the foundation for a selective breeding program in pearl oysters that are resistance to JPOMS.
