Assoc. Prof. Rabin Tuladhar is the Head of International Partenership in the College of Science and Engineering at James Cook University (JCU).  Rabin served as the Head of Engineering (2022-2023), Director of Engineering Studies (2018-2020) and Associate Dean Learning and Teaching (ADLT) (2012-2018) for the College of Science and Engineering. He successfully led Engineering program through Engineers Australia Accreditation in 2016. Rabin played an instrumental role in conceptualizing and establishing two very successful engineering programs at JCU, which include Master of Engineering (Prof) and Bachelor of Engineering in Internet of Things. During his tenure as ADLT, he implemented Major-Minor structure in Engineering; project based learning in a number of subjects; and systematic mapping of learning outcomes for Engineering disciplines. 

Rabin is a Civil Engineer, with specialisation in Concrete and Structure Engineering. He has established close collaborations with local industries to conduct translational research in the areas of sustainable and innovative construction materials, durability of structures, rehabilitation of aged infrastructure and structural health monitoring. Rabin led the research team, which was awarded the Australian Innovation Challenge 2015 for the development of 100% recycled plastic fibre for concrete reinforcement. Rabin is also a Fellow of Engineers Australia and is a Chartered Professional Engineer.

He teaches Structural Engineering to the second and third year Civil Engineering students. He is also involved in curriculum design, quality assurance in teaching, industry liaison, and academic advising. In 2011, within two years of his academic career at JCU, he was awarded Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) national citation and JCU faculty citation for his outstanding contribution to student learning.

Rabin completed his Ph.D. from Saitama University. He also worked as a Lecturer at University of Canterbury, Christchurch New Zealand. He was a Japan Society for Promotion of Sciences (JSPS) Postdoctoral Fellow. He finished his Masters in Structural Engineering from Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand and Bachelor in Civil Engineering with First Class Honours from Regional Engineering College, Silchar India.  He also completed Townsville North Queensland Emerging Leadership Program organized by Townsville Enterprise. His work and teaching experiences in some of the leading universities in his field of expertise has helped him to bring a wealth of cutting-edge knowledge to his teaching and research.

Queensland Pacific Metals - Contract Research

Sustainable assessment of nickel production residue as engineered landfill.

Summary
The residue left after leaching is a silica-rich sand material, which will be a washed, filtered and neutralised with magnesia, before being stockpiled on site for over 36 months. Numerous options for the end use of this leach residue have been investigated and were previously reported by JCU. These included re-use as a building product in bricks and as an engineered fill. The results favoured the material as a potential fill material and since these results were published numerous potential sites requiring fill in and around the Townville region have been identified. For this to be viable the mechanical and chemical properties of the material must be further investigated. If successful, the results of this test program should indicate eligibility for an End of Waste Code (EOWC).

Data driven life cycle decision making for engineering asset management in Industry 4.0 ? Modelling of uncertainty in complex systems.

Summary
Implementation of Industry 4.0 in Engineering Asset Management requires new scalable techniques for agile decision making. The ever-increasing volume of data originating from engineered assets in service can be harnessed effectively for this purpose. Development of a group of data driven decision making tools grounded on domain specific engineering fundamentals is being proposed. These solutions are intended to support asset life cycle decisions related to performance and risk and thereby improve asset performance and Systems Safety. This study aims to develop scalable life cycle decision making enablers for digital twins of complex assets.

Holcim (Australia) Pty Ltd - Contract Research

Development and performance assessment of concrete mix with recycled concrete aggregates for precast concrete pipes application

Summary
Construction and demolition (C&D) wastes primarily consists of concrete rubble. Recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) from C&D wastes has not been extensively used in concrete production due to the difficulty in quality control and its poor strength. This research project will study processing of RCA to enhance its mechanical properties and developing sustainable concrete mix with RCA for real-world application in precast concrete pipes.

Queensland Pacific Metals - Contract Research

Sustainable use of tailings as land-fill and non-structural construction material - Phase 1

Summary
The central aim of the project is the assessment of blended residue from Townsville Energy Chemicals Hub (TECH) for sustainable use. Tailings can be processed to remove the acidic content or mixed with binder to become safe backfill or non-structural materials. TECH proposed to process annually 600,000 tons of high grenade Nickel and Cobalt ore. Phase 1 of the project will undertake physical, chemical, geotechnical and engineering strength tests on tailings from TECH to estimate the limits and to assess characteristics, including the acid-insoluble content of the tailings. The understanding will help to develop research in phase 2 and 3.
