About

Dr. Mangalam Sankupellay (BCompSc (Hons), MCompSc-Res., Ph.D) is a researcher and lecturer in the Discipline of Information Technology. Her areas of expertise lie in machine learning, signal processing, image processing and artificial intelligence.

Mangalam's research focuses on developing software tools for automating long-term environmental monitoring.  These tools analyse acoustics data (e.g. forest sounds) to automatically extract relevant ecological events (e.g. the number and types of birds present).  They use machine-learning techniques such as deep learning, neural networks, and clustering algorithms.

Mangalam also investigates how the acoustics data for such environmental monitoring can be captured using Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

Community Engagement

  • With the Discipline of IT team, host the Young ICT Explorers Event in collaboration with SAP and CSIRO. YICTE is a non-profit “Technology Fair” competition, which has been created by SAP to encourage school students from grades 4 to 12 to create their best Information and Communication Technology (ICT) related projects.
Interests
Research
  • Mangalam is interested in application of machine learning and deep learning techniques to analyse environmental acoustics recordings for long term environmental monitoring. Mangalam also investigates how Internet of Things (IoT) devices can be used for recording the acoustics data that can then be used for such environmental monitoring.
  • Mangalam currently supervises one full time PhD candidate. If you are interested in studying for a Master or PhD with Mangalam, she specialises in the following areas: Machine Learning Deep Learning Artificial Intelligence Internet of Things Human Computer Interaction Visual Analytics Eco-Acoustics Please do contact Mangalam (mangalam.sankupellay@jcu.edu.au) or the Graduate Research School for further information. Research (Honours, Masters and PhD) students can start in either February or July.
Teaching
  • Mangalam’s teaching interest lie in the areas of management and analysis of data for decision making. She utilizes project-based learning with real world examples and projects to increase student engagement
