Saving the Reef: Identifying Molecular and Environmental Factors Underlying Spawning in A.millepora

Indicative Funding
$202,488 over 2 years
Summary
Coral reefs are home to a substantial number of marine species and is therefore also a key economic income and food resource for many costal communities. Many of the cornerstone species of coral use broadcast spawning to reproduce, an annual event that is time down to the hour. Although this phenomenon is well known, the cues that make the corals spawn are not fully understood. This project aims to establish what cues are sufficient and necessary for the corals to spawn as well as studying the underlying molecular mechanisms for this timed event.
Investigators
Inga Steindal in collaboration with David Miller (Research Division, College of Public Health and Medical & Vet Sciences)
Keywords
Acropora millepora; Coral seasonality; Circadian biology; Light Pollution; Opsin; Broadcast spawning
