About

My family and I came to Townsville from Adelaide in 1998 and I commenced work at the (then) School of Nursing as a lecturer. I commenced my nursing career in 1975 and worked in a variety of clinical areas as a Registered Nurse before working for 10 years as a Nurse Educator in a multidisciplinary team at the South Australian Rural Health Training Unit.

I have a number of postgraduate degrees including a PhD, the title of which was “Exploring the roles of Nurse Practitioners in Fiji: a critical social theory perspective”. I remain interested in Nurse Practitioner (NP) roles and was involved in the development and coordination of the Master of Nursing (NP) within the School of Nursing at JCU.

Since coming to JCU, I have held a number of administrative roles, including a period as Head of School from 2008-2011.

At present my research interests include the prevalence within and impact upon the health workforce of long term conditions (chronic diseases), rural health and rural nursing, and Nurse Practitioner/Advanced Practice Nursing roles in rural areas and developing countries. My professional goals are to increase my research and scholarly outputs, improve my teaching, and gain further experience in supervising higher degree students to successful completion.

Outside work, my interests include active involvement with a local Church, playing guitar, listening to music, gardening, home renovation, watching and playing sport, and spending time with family.
