About

Dr Anna Hayes is a senior lecturer in Politics and International Relations in the College of Arts, Society and Education at James Cook University, Australia. She is also a Senior Research Fellow at the East Asia Security Centre, a collaborative enterprise between Bond University, China Foreign Affairs University and the University of New Haven.

Anna specialises in non-traditional threats to security, with a particular focus on the People’s Republic of China. Her research examines the ongoing human insecurity of the Uyghurs in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, including Xinjiang’s position within China’s Eurasian pivot as part of its Belt and Road Initiative. She has also published on Australia’s use of the terminology of Indo-Pacific post-Federation, and how the Indo-Pacific concept undergirds Australia’s regional and strategic outlook, including its Two Ocean Naval strategy. Anna is currently examining Australian responses to China’s increased land reclamation and militarisation activities in the South China Sea and Australian responses to Beijing’s sharp power strategies.

In 2016, Anna co-edited: Inside Xinjiang: Space, place and power in China’s Muslim Far Northwest (Routledge, 2016) with Associate Professor Michael Clarke from the Australian National University, examining the unfolding situation in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

Anna's chapter titled 'The Kashgar Dangerous House Reform Program: social engineering, "rebirth of the nation", and a significant building block in China's creeping genocide', is part of Michael Clarke's edited volume: The Xinjiang Emergency: Exploring the causes and consequences of China's mass detention of Uyghurs.
