Biography

I was awarded my PhD in 2008 in Molecular Biology at the University of Portsmouth, School of Biological Sciences, UK. My first research position was with Prof. Jon Golledge, the Director of the Queensland Research Centre for Peripheral Vascular Disease (QRCPVD) as a Research Associate working on Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAA) from 2009-2010. I then worked at Bristol University (UK) as a Research Associate with Prof. Hans Reul, the Head of the Neuro-Epigenetics Research group, investigating how epigenetics effects stress-related learning and memory (2010-2013)

Since my appointment as an anatomy lecturer in 2013 at JCU I have received a Teaching Citation for my outstanding contribution to student learning, which was entered into the Australian Awards for University Teaching (AAUT) and I have been awarded 2 Inclusive Practice awards. I am currently the Subject Coordinator for 6 subjects (BM1031, BM1031LTD, BM1041, BM1051, BM1061 & BM1002). I also coordinate the MBBS6 Reasearch Activity which is focused on getting the medical students enaged with research. My teaching has been strongly influenced by transitional pedagogy, focusing on the transition of students into University life.  My use innovative online and blended learning resources has been recognicsed by the university and is showcased as exemplar of effective in engaging and inspiring the students. I am passionate about Anatomy, and I believe that conveying my passion and excitement through my teaching will assist in not only in engaging students but in fostering positive approaches to University and professional life.

Research

My research has always focused on epigenetics, specifically stress-related learning and memory and peripheral vascular disease (PVD). Epigenetics is at the forefront of modern science and is an extremely exciting field of research with the potential for diagnostic and therapeutic treatment of disease. One of my current projects is focused on therapeutic treatment of stroke and the role that epigenetics plays in recovery, in collaboration with colleagues in the QRC-PVD and the University of Melbourne. I also collaborate internationally with Prof. Hans Reul at Bristol University in the UK. I was also an invited guest speaker for the very prestigious TEDxCairns in 2018 which has allowed me to talk about my research on a global scale.

I have been successful in a number of grants totalling $140,000 and have actively contributed to an NHMRC project grant.

I am currently primary supervisor for a MSc student in the College of Medicine and Dentistry (CMD). I would love to hear from any students considering Honours, MSc or PhD.

Educational Research

Enriching the students experience in Anatomy, by the use of innovative technologies, is another area that I am investigating. I am currently conducting research into how effective electronic books (e-books) are at engaging students and increasing their learning experience and the use of cadaveric video's to support the student learning experience.

I have also implemented the use of 3D printing in Anatomy at JCU and I am exploring the use of this technology in teaching and how it improves student learning, using my Blended Learning and Innovation Grant (BLING) which I was awarded (2017 & 2018) and the projects are currently underway.

Interests
Professional
  • Engaging and inspiring students in the study of anatomy across a variety of health disciplines. Engaging with the community by teaching anatomy in local schools and getting the children excited about anatomy. Getting children excited about STEMM is a passion with a particular focus on getting more women into STEMM. I support the Science in Australia Gender Equity program (SAGE) and the Athena SWAN (Scientific Women's Academic Network) charter, designed to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women.
Research
  • Epigenetics is an extremely exciting and diverse field of research, which has the potential of generating novel biomarkers and therapeutic treatments in disease. Aligning with one of the four JCU strategic intent themes Tropical Health, Medicine and Biosecurity. My current project is focused on the role epigenetics plays in cognitive deficits in pathological states specifically using the new stroke model I have established here at JCU.
  • In addition to teaching I also research how technology can improve the student's learning experience and engagement, such as e-books, interactive videos and 3D printing.
Teaching
  • Effective teaching is inspiring, motivating and research-informed, this is one of the Core Principles from JCU's Learning and Teaching Policy which I incorporate into all of my teaching. Successful teaching requires careful consideration of the levels of knowledge required, methods of delivery, and approaches to student support. In order to accommodate a very diverse range of learning styles and abilities, I have developed a suite of blended learning tools and resources that can be adapted for each individual cohort. I also work closely with subject and course coordinators and other teaching staff to ensure the relevant content is delivered at the appropriate level always keeping in mind that the students are at the heart the University.
